The American System (US Customary Units) and British Imperial Measures

American weights and measurements are based upon units used in Britain before 1826, which was the date when the imperial system was officially created. Between 1960 and 1963, American and British length units were different in 2 parts per million. In the middle of 20th century it started causing issues, and governments of both countries agreed to refine the measures to be exactly the same. Since then Great Britain and the United States used the same length measurements. The U.S. the old standard of foot was maintained with the name US survey foot.

Since 1995, from 1995, the UK began using metric units in general usage. The only imperial measures of length that are currently used in official use are miles, yards, feet and inches for road traffic signs.

British Imperial Measure before 1963

First English official measurement standards were established in the 15th century. British system of units, known as imperial units, was established in 1824. The British Weights and Meausurements Act of 1824 ended all British measures laws and redefined existing units. It was 1963. Weights and Measures Act standartized the international rules.

International Nautical Measure

The international nautical mile was defined by First International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference, Monaco in 1929. This is the sole definition currently used in the majority of countries, and is the one that is recognized by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. Prior to 1929, different nations had different definitions as did it was the case that Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States did not immediately accept the international value.

Meter definition

• 17th Conference The 17th Conference defined"Meter" to be 1/299,792,458 of the distance light travels in a vacuum in one second The measurement is still in use up to the present.
